Pfeil Lino Gouge #9: The Deepest U-Cut for Heavy Hollows

The Pfeil Individual Lino Gouge with a #9 sweep gives you the deepest U-shaped channel in the range, cutting even further than the #8. That tight, near-semicircular profile bites deep into timber and lino blocks, so you can remove plenty of material fast and shape steep hollows that flatter gouges cannot reach. When your design needs strong recesses or bold, defined grooves, this is the tool that gets you there.

The pear wood palm handle fills your hand for steady, controlled work up close. Like every Pfeil carving tool, the blade is precisely ground and polished, so it cuts cleanly from the first stroke. At 125mm overall with a 70mm blade, it stays compact and responsive for small, detailed sections.

Key Benefits

  • Deepest #9 sweep: Cuts a tight U-shaped channel for steep hollows and heavy stock removal.
  • Pear wood palm handle: Comfortable, secure grip for close, controlled work.
  • Precisely ground and polished: Sharp from the first cut with trusted Pfeil quality.
  • Compact 125mm length: Steady control for small-scale carving and printmaking.
  • 70mm blade: Enough reach for deep, accurate cuts without feeling bulky.

Main Applications

  • Cutting very deep hollows and recesses in timber carving.
  • Clearing material fast across larger lino block areas.
  • Shaping steep, defined grooves and channels.
  • Roughing out bold shapes before refining with shallower gouges.
  • Adding strong texture and depth to detailed work.

When a #8 still leaves you wanting more depth, the #9 takes over. Keep one on the bench and you have the right gouge the moment your work calls for a deeper cut.
